I'd like to announce the 5th album by Singer/songwriter / traditional flute Player, Kenny Merrick jr. This award winning composer has just released his 5th album in conjunction with vocal contributions made by Delia and Irving Washawitch.
This album is very special in that Kenny is donating a portion of the proceeds from each CD sale to go towards the purchase of much needed dialysis machines for the Spirit Lake Sioux tribal nation of North Dakota.
Some quick facts about diabetes….
An estimated 16 million people, or 6% of the U.S.
Close to 800,000 individuals are diagnosed each year More than 107,000 Native Americans and Alaska Natives, or 14.5% of the population, receiving care from Indian Health Services have diabetes.
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness. Roughly 12,000-24,000 people lose their eyesight each year because of complications related to diabetes.
What can be done?
Educating patients is critical. Their risk for complications can be reduced if educated properly. We need to encourage diabetics to learn and practice the skills necessary to better control their blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Regular checkups from healthcare professionals are a necessity. Lifestyle changes must occur, such as stopping smoking, and proper dieting for weight loss and control.
In ideal circumstances, Native Americans with diabetes will have their disease under good control and be monitored frequently by a health care team knowledgeable in the care of diabetes. Better health care providers and facilities are desperately needed on United States
